Cleaning Exterior & Interior Wood Doors

Internal wood home doors can add warmth to any home. The natural beauty of wood compliments any style and the home doors themselves easily become part of the interior design. Wooden internal home doors are designed to be fairly rugged and don’t require a lot of care but it’s a good idea to give them a bit of regular attention in order to keep them looking like new and operating well.

Routine Cleaning Care For Internal Home Doors

Just like your carpets and floors, your internal home doors need to be cleaned regularly. Though they don’t require daily or even weekly cleaning treatments, including them in a monthly clean and again during major clear outs such as Spring Cleaning will keep them looking great.

First, dust the door with one of your clean rags. Remember to dust all sides of the door, including the sides and along the top and bottom edges. Next mix some warm water with your mild oil soap. The mix should be fairly weak; you don’t want to add too much soap. Generally, a good rule of thumb is a small ¼ cup of soap per gallon of water. Wash your wooden home doors with a rag that’s been rung out well. Wipe the home doors in the same direction as the grain. Buff the doors clean with another clean rag. If your rags become especially dirty as you work your way through the home swap it out for a new one. Never use a dirty rag to clean a wooden interior door. If you do, you run the risk of embedding dirt into the door, making it hard – if not impossible – to clean as it may stain the wood. Finally, wipe the doorknobs down with hand sanitizer or a sanitizing wipe. Doorknobs are notorious for collecting and passing on germs. Keeping them clean and sanitized on a regular basis can cut your chances of catching various bacterial infections or illnesses such as colds and the flu.

Annual Maintenance Of Interior Home Doors

Cleaning your home doors is the best way to keep them looking as good as new for years to come. Annual maintenance is how you’ll keep them behaving like new. It takes only a few minutes to give your home doors their annual checkup and it’s time well spent since it can add years of life to your home doors. The annual check-up and tune-up routine for your internal doors is as simple as the cleaning process.

Open and close each door a few times, feeling for any symptoms of sticking, squeaking or any other issues.
Oil the hinges if necessary and wipe them down even if they don’t need to be oiled. Visually inspect them, for any signs of wear or rust.
Visually inspect doorknobs and ensure they are easy to turn and latch into place when closed.
It’s just that simple. If there are problems with any part of your home doors, this simple inspection process will alert you to them before they become a major crisis.

Making routine care and maintenance of your home doors a part of your schedule for cleaning and other household chores is the best way to keep your home doors looking and performing like new for years to come. Since your interior home doors do so much to compliment the look of your home, it’s a simple thing you can do to ensure they remain a valuable investment. These simple steps taken literally just a few minutes and, when compared to how much a full door replacement costs, those minutes can save you thousands.
