Some important rules of Vastu Sastra

Buy the land only after getting it examined by a Vastu expert.
1 Before construction of the house perform adoration of the land and the foundation in auspicious time.
2 There must be enough provision in the construction of house to get maximum natural light, rays of morning sun and fresh air.
3 No restriction or blockade should be there in front of the door.
4 Sitting room, consulting room or the room where important decisions are taken should be in the north or east direction of the house.
5 Latrine, urinals, drain, manhole or sewage should be in north-west or south-east corner.
6 The face of worshipper should be in the direction of east, north or north-east.
7 For animals use north-west corner.
8 Items relating to fire such as kitchen furnace, generator, transformer or oil engine should be kept in south-east of the land.
9 Unwanted trees should not be sown on front-door front.
10 Main door of the factory, workshop, mill or school or any business establishment should never be in a corner.
11 The stream or flow of water (rain or collected) in north-east direction of the property is good for prosperity.

Sight Evaluation & Laying of Foundation
The auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of the land is checked by digging a trench or pit of the size with depth, length and breadth equally of one hand in a corner of the plot. Fill the same with the same soil. If the pit needs extra soil, the land is inauspicious. If the soil is in required quantum to fill up-to the level, it is general type. If the soil goes up the level, it is highly auspicious.
Vastu Sastra prescribes that the land should be tested from different aspects. Sacrificial pit and mandapa’s (stage or hall) construction should be done on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. To ascertain the suitability of land for sacrifice, burn grass or straw and then dig a pit up-to knees. Fill the pit with water to top level and recite Swastivachana. If the land is torn or found with inauspicious things such as bone, hair etc. the land is unfit for sacrifice. The land with pits or trenches, thorns, etc is also unfit for sacrifice.
Dig a pit with a hand’s length, breadth and depth and fill it with water at sunset. If the water still remains in the pit till the next morning, it is the sign of good luck. If no water remained, it is inauspicious.
Inauspicious Things Found During Digging

If termite, python etc are found during the digging of the base of house, it is better advised not to build the house there. The house built there will be a source of quarrel and peaceless. The detection of husk or chaff, snake eggs etc is indication of excruciating pain. The presence of cowrie gives all round trouble. Torn cloth presence is indicative of worry. Burnt wood (coal) signals diseases, while tiles or iron signals death of animals. Skeleton, bones or hair is capable of shortening the life of plot owner.
Cow horn, conch shell, oyster shell, or tortoise noticed during the digging is auspicious. If stones found, gain of gold is indicative. The find of bricks signals prosperity, while coin ensures happiness and copper jacks up fame and prosperity.

Land Examination in Different Modes

Colour: White, red, yellowish-green and black soils are called Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra respectively.
Taste: Put a bit of soil on the tip of tongue to test the taste. If it tastes like honey, sour, astringent or foul, it is attributed to Bhrahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishsya and Shudra respectively.
Smell: The smell of soil like ghee, blood, honey or grain and liquor is indicative of Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra.
Straw Test: The land with kush, darbh (holy grass) and sacrificial plant is indicative of Brahmins. With red grass to Kshatriya, with plant of red flowers and snakes to Vaishya and evil plants and trees and all round straws to Shudras.
Effect of Land: Brahmin land provides spiritual and divine happiness. Kshatriya land provides kingdom and increased valour. Vaishya land stands for property and prosperity. Shudra land stands for quarrel and skirmishes. In whatever colour, hard and smooth soil is always good for house building.
Second Method for Land Examination

Importance of Vasthu
Dig a pit with a hand deep, breadth and length and fill water in it. Move a hundred steps forward and return and watch the water level. If there is no decline in the water level, the land is auspicious.

Test of Land from Land Surface

The middle and hard plateau is known as surface of the land. There are four types of surface land tests.
1 Gajprishth: The land elevated towards south-west (Naishritya) and north-west (Vayavya) is known as Gajprishth. Gajprishtha land is highly auspicious. The inmates in the house in such lands will definitely have hikes in property, prosperity and longevity.
2 Koormaprishtha: The land elevated in the middle is known as Koormaprishtha. This is suitable land for house building. It provides courage, prosperity and happiness.
3 Daityaprishtha: The land elevated towards north-east (Ishan), east and south-east (Agneya) and lower towards west is known as Daityprishtha. Residing on such lands leads to loss of wealth and progeny.
4 Nagprishtha: The land lengthy towards east-west and elevated at south-east is known as Nagprishtha. Untimely death is likely to the inmates in such lands. Enmity is also certain.
If the residence is in a rectangular plot, success in every attempt and every field is certain. If it is in square plot, gain of income and wealth takes place. However, if the wealth is not handled carefully, it will lose. A circular plot attributes to growth in knowledge and intelligence. Wheel-shaped plot derives mourning. Triangular plot gives administrative difficulties. Cart-shaped plot creates loss of money. Bar-shaped plot loses animals. Bow-shaped land presents fear.
According to Vastu Sastra trees play cardinal role. Only on alive land the trees grow. Ashwath (papal) tree in the east, utumbur (gular) in the south, bar (banyan) in the west and pakar in the north bring peace and prosperity. If the bar, pakar, papal, and gular trees are in east, south, west and north respectively, they cause misery. Wrong placed papal, pakar, bar and gular trees cause fear from fire, madness, injury from arms, abdomen diseases respectively.
Vastu Sastra insists planting of auspicious trees at auspicious locations before the construction of the house. Take care the land is fertile and not barren. The foundation for house is to be laid only after land worship called Bhoomipooja.
There is a land test with the flow of water. Flood the land and notice the flow. If the flow is northwards, the land is fit for Brahmins. Eastward flow is good for Kshatriyas. Southward flow indicates fit for Vaishyas while the eastward flow is good for Shudras.
To ward off ill-effects, Vastu Sastra prescribes smearing treatment. For this heat the green fruit of tendu, green fruit of haith, flower of sebhal, seeds of trees, bark of dharnwan mixed with water in a wooden vessel. Boil the solution till it becomes one eighth in quantity. The gum from srivasak (saral), devdar tree and sarj (sakhua) plus bole, guggul, bhilava and wood apple’s part is grinded and mixed with the solution. This mixture is called Vajralepa which is smeared on the structure.
Bhoomi Pooja is an important aspect of Vastu Sastra. The land is considered sleeping when the moon star (Nakshatra) falls at 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 19th and 26th from the Nakshatra of sun. The digging of land in these Nakshatras is strictly not advisable.
The setting up of Nakshatras is done from the Sun’s Nakshatra taking the front part of it as Taurus-shaped. Thereafter calculate the auspicious moment and start construction. Beginning of construction in Ashwini, Rohini, Poorva Phalgani, Chitra and Hasta ensure happiness, prosperity and progenies. If this is done on Wednesday, it is extremely good. The construction started at the time of Jupiter, Venus, Sun and Moon exalted and strong with the help of Jupiter, Sun and Moon power is highly auspicious.
The Sun in Aries ensures reputation, while the Sun in Taurus helps increase wealth. The Sun in Cancer provides happiness from servants, while the Sun in Libra provides happiness. The Sun in Scorpio increases wealth, the Sun in Capricorn ensures property. The Sun in Aquaria ensures gems.
If at-least two planets, Jupiter and Venus, are exalted or in their own houses and the tenth house having Mercury, Jupiter, Venus in their own houses as per the horoscope of the house under construction, the age of the house will be minimum 200 years. Moreover, Goddess of Prosperity and Wealth, Lakshmi, will be present there as long as the house is there.

Housewarming (Grihapravesh) Ceremony

Vastu Sastra insists housewarming ceremony as a must to ward off influences of any ill-forces and to have prosperity, good health and peace to the inhabitants of the house. If the living is started without proper havan (Grahapravesh pooja), it is more likely to have ill-effects despite all precautions taken prior to the construction. There are three types of housewarming ceremony – Apurva, Sampurva and Dwandwa.
The ceremony conducted for new house is Apurva. Sampurva ceremony is conducted when the family returns to the house after a long gap of time. Dwandwa is conducted when the family re-starts their living after reconstruction work.
Housewarming has to be completed up-to 10th tithi (Dashmi) of Krishna Paksha (fortnight after the full moon) and in Shukla Paksha (fortnight after the new moon). The entering to the house should be always after the rising of the moon. The dooming (setting) of Jupiter and Venus are generally considered auspicious, expecting repaired house. For all types of housewarming, it is auspicious when the position of moon and star is congenial with holy confluence (Lagna Shuddhi) of planets.
It is important for Grihapravesh (housewarming) that the Sun remains in its bhavas (auspicious path). When the Sun remains in 5th bhavas it is auspicious for housewarming for house facing south For house facing west suitable time is when the Sun is in the 11th bhavas. For house facing north suitable time is when the Sun is in 7th bhavas.
The owner should enter the house with a water filled pot, flower, lamp, auspicious grass (durvadal), leaf of mango tree in both the hands and worship a virgin girl, a priest and a cow before the entrance. The priest carrying an auspicious pot (Kalash) moves ahead and the family head (owner) follows him.
Dwarvedha

The things creating hindrance to the free movement of air and sunrays inside the house is known as Dwarvedha in Vastu Sastra. In simple terms Dwarvedha means restriction or blockade of the path of wind and sunrays. Dwarvedha is not only related to the house directly but is also related to the objects positioned adjacent or near to the house. There are ten types of Dwarvedha.
1 Avoid making door in the middle and meeting place of the house.
2 Do not make a door on the back portion of the house. This is not applicable to multi-storey structures.
3 Avoid pond, well, big trees, pole, peg for animals and garbage in front of the main gate or door.
4 Should not have mud or flowing water in front of the main door.
5 Killavedha: Should not have any peg to tie animals in front of the door. This is known as Killavedha.
6 Swarvedha: If there is sound when the door is opened or closed, it is called Swarvedha which is a bad omen on all counts.
7 Koopvedha: Should not have a well, man-hole or water-reservoir in front of the house. This aspect is called Koopvedha.
8 Brahmvedha: If a factory or an oil-grinding machine is there in front of the house, it is called Brahmvedha.
9 If the door of the house is wave shaped, it is Dwarvedha.
10 Should not have a wall of another house in front of the house.
Chhayavedha

Chhayavedha means obstruction by shadow. Three types of Chhayavedha are generally taken into consideration.
1 Where there is a mountain nearby east of the plot, avoid construction. The falling of shadow of the mountain on the house is inauspicious.
2 Similar is the case if there is a big tree nearby east of the plot.
3 Shadow of temple or temple flag should not fall on the house.

Vrikshavedha

Vrikshavedha means obstruction by tree. Growing of big trees near the house is not advisable for various reasons.
1 The foundation of the house becomes weak due to the penetration of roots and the walls get cracked.
2 The birds or animals inhabiting on the trees are nuisance and harmful to the inmates of the house.
3 Dead or leafless tree in front of the door is inauspicious.
4 The trees with two branches in front of the house are inauspicious.
5 Cyclone, typhoon and heavy rains cause uprooting of trees on the house.
6 The shadow of tree should not fall on the house for more than one hour.
7 Do not plant undesirable trees on the door front and around the house. Udumbur tree (wild fig tree) in east, banyan tree in the south and Nyogrodh tree in the west are strictly inauspicious.
8 Trees bearing fruits, milk (visvous) and thorns are inauspicious near the house.
Auspicious Plants and Trees

Vastu Sastra
There are certain plants and trees which are auspicious for planting in the house compound.
1 Banana, champa, chameli, patal and other flower plants with pleasant smell.
2 Banyan tree in east, Gular in south, Pipal in west and Pakad in north.
3 Basil anywhere in the compound.

Margvedha

Margvedha means obstruction in the path.
In the case of factory or industry if there is a pond on one side and ditch on the other side where garbage is burnt or fire is present it is considered inauspicious. If the compound wall is higher than the structure of the establishment it is too considered Margvedha.
It is highly inauspicious if the house is located on the junction of 3 ways as it comes under Margvedha. A single path to two houses is also considered Margvedha. If a public used path is located within the compound wall, it is inauspicious and capable of delivering worries and pains to the inmates.
Staying in broken or dilapidated house causes sub-due mood to the residents and forbids the progress.
Dwar Praman (Door Measurement)

Vasthu
The general rule is to have the height of the door double its breadth. The width prescribed is generally four feet or at-least three and half feet. The panels of the door can be either two or one. The ancient people in fact prescribed the height of the door three times of the width.
The door should never be in the middle. For multi-storey structures the upper floors’ doors in line with the ground floor door.
The door closing on its own without any mechanical aids is considered inauspicious.

Angles (Kona)

The joint of two sides is corner or angle. Correct fixation of corner during construction is essential. If there is any disparity it may result in evil influence for ever.
If the direction is towards west, fix a peg in south-west and from where draw a line with thread towards north with western boundary and towards east with southern boundary. Then mark at 3 feet in the northern direction from the corner of the peg and mark 4 feet towards east with southern boundary. When joining these two points it will measure 5 feet.
If the measurement is more than 5 feet, then south-east corner is protruding. If it is less, south-west corner is increased. It has to be corrected to get exact 5 feet.
In the case of pointed direction is towards south, fix the peg in south-east corner and mark the point at 3 feet towards west from southern boundary and 4 feet towards north from eastern boundary. The line joining these two points should be 5 feet. If less than 5 feet, east and south-east are protruding.
If the pointed direction is towards east, fix the peg in north-east corner. Then mark the point at 3 feet towards south from eastern boundary and at 4 feet towards west from northern boundary. The two points joining line should be 5 feet. If it measures less than 5 feet, it means north-west is increased, requiring correction.
In the case of pointed direction towards north, fix the peg in north-west corner and mark the point at 3 feet towards east from north boundary and 4 feet towards south in west direction. The two points joining line should be 5 feet. If it is more than 5 feet, it is increasing towards west south-west. If it is less than 5 feet, it is increasing towards west north-west.
The measurement of land and room with four-corner (Chatushkona) and big four-corner (Deergha Chatushkona) is to be done from the measurement of south-west (Naishritya) to north-east (Ishan) and north-west (Vayavya) to south-east (Agneya). This type of measurement makes sure the correctness or otherwise of both the measurements. This method is to be followed from plot-decision to foundation and from foundation to wall construction.

Path-hit & Other Aspects

Path-hit (path obstruction) to the house is good in some cases and bad in some cases.
House facing East: It is Always auspicious and beneficial to the owner.
House facing South: House crossing the line of path is affected by path-hit in east Agneya (south-east) and west Naishritya (south-west) is affected adversely.
House facing West: If it crosses the path line it results in path-hit for bad from north Vayavya (north-west) and south Naishritya (south-west).
House facing North: If it crosses the path line, it is path-hit from Ishan (east) and Vayavya (west). This presents goodness.
If the door is facing north-east, make sure the house crosses the path line. People living in such houses will always be happy in all aspects. If the path line is covered more by the house, it will result in more prosperous and more happiness. On the contrary, the inmates of house of which front door is facing west-south is bound to face hindrances.

Land Suitability
The four-angled, enlarged four-angled and right angled lands are always good for house construction. Large land too falls in this category, but it should not have cut in any direction.
On parallel lines the land with road in east-west direction is good for house construction. It is always better to have the plot on parallel or straight road as indicator of the direction.
Never go in for a land in between two big and large plots. The house in such land is highly inauspicious and bound to have all round troubles to the occupants.
The front path of the house leading towards east and north considered auspiciously good, while the front path leading towards south-east and south-west is highly inauspicious and trouble shooting.
There is scope for rectification of errors relating to Vastu whereas no such scope in the case of land. It is therefore absolutely necessary to take adequate care in selecting the land for house construction.

Vastu Effects on Business Set-up

Business means investment for income. If no income is derived from investment, the whole efforts and money go waste. If the construction of the business building is faulty, it is bound to have adverse effect by way of loss or stagnant in growth. The building constructed in accordance with Vastu science ensures growth and profit.
Foundation laying of business structures should be done in right Muhurta (auspicious timing). Brood over and discuss about the positions of moon and stars for finding enough time of Muhurta. In case there is hurry to have the foundation laid then find out the position of moon in Libra or an auspicious ascendant to do the laying.
Finding out the right Muhurta for starting the business is also very vital. Initiation from morning to forenoon is always better. Afternoon, evening or night initiation is always bad.
East facing factory, shop or office is auspicious on all accounts. West facing ones are destined to have adverse results. North facing establishments tends to hike wealth and brighten the image. South facing establishments are amenable to the opposite result of north facing.
For good results the businessmen should sit either east facing or north facing. The businessmen sitting west or south facing are likely to incur loss or have no growth.
The shape of the shop or office is also a matter to be considered seriously. The front enlarged and rear narrowed shape is inauspicious. Lion-face like shape is very good. The large volume shop or office is auspicious. Proportionate or symmetrical volume also comes in the category of good. Triangular or crooked shape is considered inauspicious. A ditch in front is not a good sign.
In case the business structure or its shape is inauspicious there is an easy remedial way to overcome the problem. Place a Shri Yantra (a ritualistic small object) under the ground or foundation as directed by a Vastu expert. This will nullify the bad effects.

Obstructions and Faults

The influence of Vedha (obstruction) on any part of the house is also necessary to take into account. Vedha is inauspicious.
The uneven floor of the house, ditch of water, well or path of another house lying in front of the door is called Taalavedha (floor obstruction). If the back portion of the house is low or high, it is too called Taalavedha. If the corners of the house are unequal, it is called Konavedha (corner obstruction). The door of which upper frame is projecting back is called Shirvedha (head obstacle).
Faults take place on various fronts. Door composition and position, facing directions, material mix-up, long or short extensions etc are few among them. Improper positioning of terrace in front of the door is also considered inauspicious. If the house has only one terrace it has to be in front of the house in the south portion.
When a quarrel erupts in the family between brothers, in many cases a division is made to the house by erecting a wall in the middle. This is highly wrong. In such cases one will prosper and the other will suffer.
